Hebrews 7:1-3 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all. first being translated, “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning. “king of peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priests continually.
So many Christians ask why? Why do we need the Old Testament? Well, we need to remember that there is no Christianity without there first being Judaism. Jesus was a Jew. The disciples were Jewish. The entire story of the man Melchizedek is called a Christophany. That is Jesus came to the earth in the form of this man Melchizedek. It is an odd story that transpired after Abraham rescued his family from kings that captured them. When coming back he met with the king of Salem. A High Priest.
During this meeting Abraham tithed him a tenth of what he had. They had communion. And Abraham was blessed by this man. Now this was before the law. So it was the first recorded tithe. This man was the king of Salem. Now known as Jerusalem, “God’s city.” The communion was before Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. Melchizedek was known as the king of peace. This all points to the fact that Jesus met with Abraham that day. He has no beginning, no end, and no genealogy. This story just points to the Son of Man and His love and interest in man.
Jesus is still our High Priest today. We just need to acknowledge Him as such. He loves us and is interested in us. Not our flesh but the soul that is inside us. The flesh is not us but a covering for the real us. The soul is eternal. Our souls will live eternally in one of two places, heaven or hell. Jesus teaches this more than anyone. He came and took our punishment for the sin we committed on the cross. He died, was buried and then resurrected. He suffered this because He did not want our souls to be separated from Him. Whether your soul is or is not separated from Him is entirely your choice.
